Charlotte's main character is suddenly apparently available. But why?

Good morning. The NBA Draft is over. Let's basketball.

ESPN reported on Wednesday evening that the Hornets are fielding aggressive pursuits for LaMelo Ball, their offensive engine and point guard. (Ohm Youngmisuk wrote the story, citing information from Shams Charania.) There are no teams mentioned in that piece, nor is there a rationale offered for why Charlotte – who just had a dream rise over the last 50 games of the 2025-26 season as Ball, Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel worked beautifully together – is interested in getting off of Ball.

Jon Krawczynski and Sam Amick of The Athletic filled in one of the gaps, citing that the Timberwolves are in the chase, seeking to add more offensive creativity and playmaking to a team that has a hole at point guard unless Anthony Edwards and Ayo Dosunmu just fill it themselves. The Athletic says Jaden McDaniels remains off the table, which leads one to believe that either Rudy Gobert or Naz Reid would be the bait. The team just traded Julius Randle and is short on draft picks. How soon is Joan Beringer going to be ready, again?

Marc Stein and Jake Fischer at The Stein Line filled in another gap: the Raptors and Bucks are also pursuing a Ball trade, and other teams are expected to step up.

LaMelo is a talented player with some obvious flaws. The claim that he wasn't a winning player was disabused this season; in fact, it was confirmed and disabused in quick succession inside the fourth quarter and overtime of that insane play-in game against Miami.

You can see why the Wolves (who need to lift responsibility from Edwards), Raptors (who could use more halfcourt creativity) and Bucks (who need a new offensive engine) would be interested.

But why are the Hornets open for business here?
