When we commend clutch play, we are championing the ability to perform amazing feats under pressure. The pressure of time, which is the pressure of limits on opportunity, of the impending death of an opportunity. Crunch time in a sporting contest is desperate like a life-or-death situation is desperate albeit on a different scale. To achieve what you seek under these circumstances requires action, not thinking; performance, not practice; fearlessness, not hesitation. It is trust in yourself and your practices and in the bodies that hold you. It is trust that whatever happens, you will not regret your decision, however it resolves.
Fear is an enormous source of suffering. In counterpose, fearlessness is beauty. It is the path to becoming that which we seek to make ourselves. It is the path to survival first and then flourishing. For at least one moment in Berlin on Thursday, Anthony Black understood that.
I will, in fact, take that with me. Let Anthony Black's brave example imbue us with the mindset to act beyond the shackles of fear.
