White flags in Clipperland

Steve Ballmer decides the accusations aren't actually provably false and concedes defeat in the Great Fake Tree War of 2025-26.

The Clippers, to Pablo Torre, on September 2, 2025:

"Neither Mr. Ballmer nor the Clippers circumvented the salary cap or engaged in any misconduct related to Aspiration. Any contrary assertion is provably false."

Steve Ballmer to everyone, September 13, 2026:

"We are committing to put this chapter behind us. We have communicated to the NBA that we are complying with the penalties assessed by the league, have paid the fine, and are moving forward."

The Clippers have conceded defeat and, according to this statement, will no longer pursue legal action to fight the NBA's steep penalties on the franchise. At no point in Ballmer's Sunday night statement – dropped at the end of the first NFL Sunday of the season, smart PR team – does he accept responsibility for what Wachtell Lipton's report or Pablo's year of reporting show happens. At no point does Ballmer acknowledge he broke the rules, lied about breaking the rules and tried to bully the entire NBA media ecosystem. There's no contrition. But there's a signal that he's not going to fight it at all, which should close this chapter. Don't expect any follow-up reports from Wachtell Lipton or additional fines from Adam Silver. Any additional justice will likely come from continued reporting or the courts.
